Climate Change: An Evidence-Based Assessment

A clear-eyed look at what climate science gets right, where it still struggles, and who should pay attention.

Since the Industrial Revolution, the world has been running a large, unplanned experiment with the atmosphere, and the results are now plain to see. The IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report concludes that human influence has unequivocally warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land, producing widespread and rapid changes across the climate system.

What climate science does well is aggregate enormous amounts of data into coherent, policy-relevant conclusions. That process produces a shared factual baseline. The Royal Society's 2020 review of evidence and causes likewise notes that the warming observed since the mid-20th century is overwhelmingly driven by human activities, especially the release of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels and from land-use change. For policymakers, educators, and planners, that consensus function is the field's strongest asset.

Where the assessment process falls short is in precision, timeliness, and translation into action. Global projections are robust, but regional and local details remain harder to pin down. Because the IPCC synthesizes already-published research, its reports can lag behind the newest findings. The IPCC's 2023 synthesis report also makes clear that knowing the problem has not yet produced change at the required speed: limiting warming to 1.5 °C demands rapid, deep, and sustained cuts in greenhouse-gas emissions, yet current policies and pledges are not on track to meet that goal. Turning physical science into economic and political decisions remains the weakest link.

Still, the audience is broader: journalists, business strategists, educators, and engaged citizens all need the same grounded view of risks, uncertainties, and trade-offs.

  • The gap between scientific knowledge and policy action remains large, and dense technical language can distance non-expert readers.
