Mechazilla Arms: How SpaceX Plans to Catch Starship

SpaceX could try to catch Starship's upper stage with Mechazilla's chopstick arms on Flight 14 after a precise Flight 13 splashdown.

SpaceX is preparing to do something no orbital rocket has done before: catch a returning upper stage out of the air with mechanical arms. The company has already used the launch tower's "chopsticks" to snag Super Heavy boosters, but grabbing the Starship spacecraft itself is the next target. Elon Musk says the attempt could happen on Flight 14, the mission immediately following Starship's successful Flight 13 splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

The tower doing the catching is called Mechazilla, a structure at Starbase, Texas equipped with two giant arms. During Flight 13, Ship 40 completed a controlled soft splashdown and stayed intact after reentry for the first time. Musk noted that the ship's landing was precise and that it reached a vertical stance just above the water, the exact orientation needed for a tower catch. Based on that performance, he posted on X that SpaceX would attempt the ship catch on the next flight unless the post-flight data review turned up problems.

Catching instead of landing is not a stunt. Starship is far larger than a Falcon 9, so adding traditional landing legs would require extra infrastructure and add significant weight. The chopstick catch removes those needs and fits SpaceX's goal of rapid reuse for both stages. Super Heavy has already proven the concept works, with successful catches during Flight 5 on October 13, 2024, Flight 7 in January 2025, and Flight 8 in March 2025.

SpaceX did not always plan to wait this long for a ship catch. After the first booster catch, Musk had hoped to catch Starship sometime in 2025. A string of explosive failures during the first half of the year pushed the schedule back. Flight 10 in mid-2025 broke the slump with an on-time launch, smooth stage separation, and payload deployment, though it still ended with an ocean splashdown rather than a catch.

The timeline also depends on the next vehicle iteration. Musk said in an August post that Starship catch would likely come on Flights 13 through 15, depending on how well the V3 generation performs. The Flight 10 vehicle was a V2, slightly smaller than the forthcoming V3, which Musk expected could be built, tested, and perhaps flown by the end of the year.

The hardware is expanding beyond Texas. SpaceX recently completed the first Mechazilla tower at Cape Canaveral's LC-37A complex, a key step toward Florida Starship operations. The next phase will add the chopsticks and service systems needed for launches and landings there.

Flight 13 served as a kind of pre-qualification run. Ship 40's attitude, engine cutoff sequence, and landing burn all matched what a tower catch would demand. SpaceX has sent teams to recover the floating vehicle so engineers can inspect it directly and confirm how the heat shield held up.

If Flight 14 goes ahead with the catch, it would mark the first time the upper stage returns to the launch tower instead of splashing down. The maneuver remains risky for both the rocket and the ground infrastructure, which is why the company has emphasized careful data review before committing. Still, the precision shown during Flight 13 suggests SpaceX is closing in on a fully reusable Starship system, one where both the booster and the ship come back to the same launch pad.
