New Movies 2026: August Sci-Fi, Blockbuster Sequels, and Streaming Standouts

August 2026 is shaping up to be an unusually crowded corridor for original science fiction. Ridley Scott returns to the genre for the first time in nine years with The Dog Stars, a dystopian epic set to open on August 28. The film stars Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin, with Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong in supporting roles, and was originally slated for March before being pushed back to give editors and the post-production team more time to meet Scott Free production standards.

Two weeks earlier, on August 14, Warner Bros. is releasing The End of Oak Street, an original non-IP blockbuster produced by J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella’s Bad Robot alongside Jackson Pictures. David Robert Mitchell wrote and directed the film, which follows the Platt family—Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery—after a cosmic event lifts their suburban street and deposits it in a prehistoric wilderness complete with dinosaurs. CBR noted that the project spent two years in development delay, was once called Flowervale Street, and was moved to August to avoid competing directly with The Devil Wears Prada 2.

That scheduling call looks wise in hindsight. The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened on May 1 and grossed $233.6 million worldwide in its first weekend, going on to collect $666.1 million globally against a $100 million budget. Hathaway’s commercial momentum heading into The End of Oak Street is arguably the strongest it has been in years.

The year’s biggest box-office story so far is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and reportedly budgeted at $225 million, the Sony sequel opened to $355 million in North America, second only to Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million debut, and set a new record for Sony Pictures. Its $168 million opening day beat Endgame’s $157 million Friday, and its worldwide debut reached $927 million across more than 73,500 screens, with China contributing $121 million. Audiences graded it an A CinemaScore and a five-star PostTrak rating, while critics landed it at 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has also been a defining 2026 release. Ars Technica reported that the epic has already crossed $700 million worldwide, surpassing Oppenheimer’s entire theatrical run and more than covering its $250 million production budget. The film slid to second place in its third weekend with $51 million as Spider-Man: Brand New Day absorbed most of the oxygen, but the combined draw of the two films helped deliver the biggest North American box-office weekend on record, roughly $430 million in total ticket sales according to Rentrak.

Not every 2026 genre film has commanded blockbuster scale. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, an R-rated sci-fi action comedy starring Vince Vaughn, premiered at the 2026 South by Southwest Festival before landing on Disney+ and Hulu in March. Slashfilm described it as one of the year’s most underrated movies, praising its goofy, eccentric time-machine premise involving a framed mob underling and two versions of Vaughn’s loan-shark character.

Taken together, the 2026 slate reveals a market pulled in two directions: franchise juggernauts like Spider-Man and The Odyssey are posting record numbers, while studios are still willing to place sizable bets on original concepts such as The End of Oak Street and The Dog Stars. Whether audiences will turn out for those originals the way they have for established properties will become clearer by late August.
